"Still We Rise: The Young Black Artist" is a panel discussion on June 7th, 2020, by several Black artists at the forefront of their industries. The conversation includes the current cultural climate, a history of micro-aggressions and "well-meaning" sentiments, what it means to be an effective ally, and how to allow for Black voices, and Black stories to be told through our art and our communities, as well as many other topics. The conversation is honest, open, and at times can be triggering with its intense subject matters of race, racism, discrimination, and oppression, but is a truly important dialogue, well worth your time. I encourage you not to skip the first 8 minutes of silence, the "This event will begin shortly" section, and instead take those 8 minutes for a moment of quiet reflection, a moment to think about the world around you, and your friends, your colleagues. To think of who you are an ally for, and how those who are your ally stand up for you, and support you. To remember the names of those we have lost in the fight for equality. Names like Eric Garner, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Dominique Clayton, Walter Scott, Sandra Bland, John Crawford III, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd.
Panelists Include: Andrew Adridge, Baritone Joshua Blue, Tenor Amanda Lynn Bottoms, Mezzo-Soprano Julia M. Bottoms, Visual Artist Julia Bullock, Soprano Joshua Conyers, Baritone Aaron Crouch, Tenor Tyler Mason-Dräffen, Educator Jeffery Miller, Jazz Trombonist Kenneth Overton, Baritone Rehanna Thelwell, Mezzo-Soprano.
